Introduction

CIC energiGUNE is located in the Alava technology park and is one of several ambitious projects currently being introduced in the Basque Country to reinforce research, development and innovation.

It will focus on the following areas:

Excellence research

• Generating knowledge and developing technology through research activities in the centre's working areas.
• Increasing the number of scientific and technological researchers working in the Basque research system.

Transfer of knowledge and results

• A clear commitment to transferring any knowledge generated to the business sector, through several channels:
  • Research projects in cooperation with technology centres and/or businesses.
  • Sale of industrial and intellectual property rights, in the form of patents, etc.
  • Spin-offs.

High-level training

• Organisation and hosting of major training activities in the scientific-technological areas in which the centre specialises.

Coordination of R&D&I work

• Harmonising and coordinating the work being carried out in the energy field by different agents (universities, technology centres, etc.) throughout the Basque Country.
• Channelling this coordination through the Virtual CIC (see Structure)

To a large extent, CIC energiGUNE  is in charge of meeting the targets set in the Energy Strategy of the Basque Country 3E 2010. Its work will be decisively important in promoting new global business groups operating in new market niches and will help position the Basque Country as a major reference in research excellence in the area of energy and sustainability.

  Energy strategy of the Basque Country (3E-2010)

  The Basque energy strategy for 2010 (3E-2010) is the Basque government's primary instrument for ensuring that the region reduces its energy dependency in an environmentally sustainable way. Its two central pillars are energy efficiency and the development of energy sources.

  The first great target is to achieve savings in annual energy consumption as compared to current trends (+3.4%) that will lead to a reduction of 15% in total consumption in 2010.

  The other great challenge is to make energy sources account for 12% of primary energy consumption in the Basque Country, and for 30% (together with Combined Heat and Power) of the power supply.

  To achieve these objectives, the strategy envisages the construction of electricity and natural gas infrastructures, and will prioritise research, development and innovation (R&D&I) in the energy area. » Web Page
