CIC energiGUNE is now offering the opportunity to complete the Research Master project on the fields of electrochemical and thermal energy storage at our facilities. The offer is aimed at students registered for a Master programme at university in related subjects: materials science, physics, chemistry, engineering, etc.

Eligibility

Candidates must be pre-registered as master students at a European University in a materials related Master Programme. Applications are open to students worldwide as long as their degree is validated / homologated and approved by the University where they intend to register, and that the university of choice agrees to establish a collaboration and a co-direction of the Master Thesis with CIC energiGUNE, with a minimum stay of 6 months at CIC energiGUNE for the practical part of the Master Thesis.

More information on pre-registration in local universities who already have a collaboration agreement with CIC energiGUNE is available at their websites, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) or Mondragon University (MU).

The Master

CIC energiGUNE offers 6 grants, 4 in EES and 2 in TES, to eligible students who wish to complete their Master Thesis with us. Financial support will be 6,000€ / year. Students may also be eligible for financial support by the university or other institutions.

Candidates should show commitment to carry on with a PhD Fellowship within the centre at the end of the Master's Degree, always subject to a positive evaluation during the Master Course.

The Master Thesis topics on offer for academic year 2013-2015 are as follow:

• Li-based batteries (EES)
• Na-based batteries (EES)
• Solid electrolytes for Li and Na batteries (EES)
• Supercapacitors (EES)
• Compatibility of thermal energy storage materials with heat transfer fluids (TES)
• Advanced carbon composite materials for thermal energy storage application (TES)

The main objective of the course to disseminate the key challenges that the new FET Flagships initiative of the European Community will address in next years.

FET Flagships are ambitious large-scale, science-driven, research initiatives
that aim to achieve a visionary goal. The scientific advance should provide a strong and broad basis for future technological innovation and economic exploitation in a variety of areas, as well as novel benefits for society

Graphene is layered material made up of carbon atoms, whose thickness can be a single atom layer. It has intensively investigated after its isolation in 2004. Graphene shows a number of very special features, like high electrical conductivity, extreme stiffness and resistance,... These properties have made graphene a very interesting topic in fundamental science, and have led to a variety of applications. In January 2013 the European Union selected graphene as one of the topics to work on under the initiative Flagship.

The course to take place at the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo will present novel results in graphene research, and it will address the challenges faced by the Spanish community working on graphene.

The Human Brain Project (HBP) will address the last developments in this topic, as well as the impact on society that will be generated through this large scale multinational initiative. HBP sessions are scheduled following a scheme that will allow setting up a general overview of the main organization and the scientific structure of the project. Both, national and international HBP representatives will be attending. There will be two types of sessions; one will be focused on general aspects of the project, along with lectures concerning more detailed aspects of the main components of the project: Neuroscience Data, ICT Platforms, Applications & Ethics and Society; and the other will be focused on the Spanish participation in this new EC initiative.

The core mission of the Materials Research Society is to promote leading-edge research on materials around the world. The Materials Research Society (MRS) and the Sociedad Mexicana de Materiales (SMM) are excited to be working together on this global effort by growing the International Materials Research Congress (IMRC) held annually in Cancun, Mexico.

The IMRC Congress currently offers a range of symposium topics of interest to the materials research community at large. It has become a popular meeting destination with about 1,500 attendees from more than 30 countries.

The workshop includes 10 oral presentations of junior researchers, a poster session, and two invited talks of CIC Microgune and CIC Energigune. The researchers will talk about samokems, polymers, photons and grapheme.

The 14th European Conference on Solid State Chemistry will focus on crystal chemistry, chemical bonding in solids and relationships with physical and reactivity properties such as electronic and ionic transport, magnetic and optical properties, redox phenomena. The five invited speakers which confirmed their participations will cover most of these topics.  Since the first ECSSC in Strasbourg in 1978, these conferences have attracted many scientists from Europe and all over the world.
